If you want a smartphone with a ridiculously fast mobile broadband connection, and you crave a device with a large screen that’s also so sharp you’ll spend all day looking at it in awe, then there really is no better choice today than Verizon’s Samsung Droid Charge. Sure, it doesn’t pack the latest dual core processors from NVIDIA or Texas Instruments, but to be frank we don’t really think the current smartphone version of Android (2.3 Gingerbread) is even optimized to take advantage of all the processing power these new superphones hitting the market this summer will pack under the hood. The Charge also doesn’t come with near field communication support, meaning whenever Isis rolls out in 2012 you’ll need to buy a new smartphone to get in on the wireless payments game, but then again we’re looking at a 2H 2012 launch, so you’ll likely be upgrading your handset by that time. There is one thing the Charge is capable of doing however that very few devices on the market can, and that’s charge wirelessly.
For $30 you can pick up a new battery cover for your Charge that’ll let you power it up using any Qi enabled wireless charging pad. Just yesterday we wrote about how iSuppli is predicting revenue from sales of wireless charging equipment is going to grow 616% this year compared to 2010 figures. It’s accessories like these that are going to enable a new ecosystem to grow rapidly and before you know it your next furniture purchase from IKEA or Walmart is going to come with a wire sticking out so you can plug it into the wall and turn your new table into one big charging pad.
It’s only a matter of time until all new phones come with the ability to do this. Add high speed wireless file transfers, wireless HDMI, low power Bluetooth, and your next phone might not even have any ports.
