Not far behind Bell, Telus has launched the BlackBerry Torch 9860, RIM’s first all-touchscreen phone in a long time. The pricetag is sitting at $99.99 on a three-year contract, for $549.99 with no strings attached.
The BlackBerry Torch 9860 has the biggest, sharpest screen we’ve seen on a BlackBerry to date, measuring 3.7 inches and 800 x 480 pixels. The 5 megapixel camera on the back can shoot 720p video and has an LED flash for low-light conditions, and the whole package is powered by a 1.2 GHz processor with 768 MB of RAM. The software is a modest iterative upgrade on the old BlackBerry OS, including a few goodies like augmented reality support, a 3D-capable graphics rendering engine, and voice-activated universal search. There’s no NFC in there like the Bold 9900 or the Curve 9360, or mobile hotspot as previously expected, but at least the OS is running smoothly for a change. Be sure to take a look at our review if you’re thinking about picking one up.
Earlier this month, Telus launched the Bold 9900 and Torch 9810, and just last week put out the Curve 9360. It won’t be long until all of the major Canadian carriers are offering all four of RIM’s latest phones, and by the end of next month, all of the major U.S. providers should have at least a few of ’em. Anyone up north interested in picking up the new Torch can find the 9860 in the Telus online store.
