Not sure why it took so long for Verizon and Samsung to launch the Gingerbread update for the Galaxy Tab, but the good news is that it will be released in the (very) near future. The 70MB heavy download will make your 7-inch tablet more powerful, bringing many new features and bug fixes to the mix. Here’s what’s new (highlights):

  • Improved Word Selection and Copy Functionality
  • The “View Data Plan” icon, which will replace the “Music Player” icon on the homescreen, allows Pay-As-You-Go users to adjust their Data Service subscription.
  • Download Manager App – new App to manage all of your downloads from web browsing, email attachments and other apps.
  • App and Power Management Details – under Manage Applications, a new ‘Running’ tab displays a list of active applications and the storage and memory being used by each.
  • Ability to use the front-facing camera as a camcorder.
  • Download App icon now displays within the Applications page.
  • Widgets will resize to accurately reflect landscape or portrait mode.
  • Enhanced display options have been added (wallpaper, color density, etc.).
  • Support for “Verizon Pay As You Go” prepaid data service plans.
  • Downloads no longer timeout in Android Market.
  • Corrected recorded video orientation.
  • Google security patches.

Verizon’s website says the update is coming soon and in the meantime they provided users with two PDFs about “Benefits of Software Upgrade” and “Software Update Instructions,” both of which can be accessed from here.
