Huawei is a smaller handset manufacturer, best known for its battle with the US government over a billion dollar hardware contract with Sprint. Besides networking hardware, the Chinese company makes inexpensive phones for smaller carriers like Leap Wireless and MetroPCS.
In 2012, the manufacturer plans to take it up a notch and ship LTE phones with major carriers like Verizon Wireless, AT&T, T-Mobile and Sprint. There’s no contracts on the table, at least none is Huawei is disclosing, but the manufacturer is talking to the tier 1 carriers. It wisely recognizes that it has “to have more exposure with the Tier 1 operators”, if it wants to break into the US market.
Huawei is also looking to make a big marketing push in the US starting the second quarter. These high-profile ads will be timed to its launch of the Ascend P1 S. The Ascend P1 S was announced at CES 2012 and is touted as the world’s thinnest Android smartphone. We got some hands-on time with Huawei’s dual-core smartphone which you can read about here.
