It’s hard to believe, but Mobile World Congress 2012 kicked off one week ago today. HTC’s One series may have been impressive, as was Nokia’s 41 megapixel PureView, but there was one device we all kept in the back of our minds. One that we’re pretty confident in saying will be the most talked about Android smartphone this year. We’re of course talking about the Samsung Galaxy S III, the successor to the hugely popular Galaxy S II that was announced this time last year and then started shipping a few months later in April/May. We don’t know anything about this as yet to be announce magical creature, and the rumors that are flying around the internet are pretty batshit insane: 1080p resolution display, quad core processor, seriously? The other key missing pieces of information are when will the Galaxy S III get announced and when will it start shipping?
According to ZDNet Korea, we’re going to see the Galaxy S III get announced in April and then end up on the market either during the same month or the month thereafter, but definitely before the 2012 Olympic games kick off in London in late July. That report was filed a few days ago. More recently we’ve discovered another Korean website, MT, which says ZDNet is wrong. Who should you believe? To be perfectly frank, it doesn’t matter at this point. Samsung had balls when they said they wouldn’t make a big splash at Mobile World Congress, and now we know why. Apple sent out invites to their iPad 3 event on the second day of the show. Everyone who was in attendance magically forgot about what they’ve just seen during the past 48 hours and instead turned their geek lust towards Apple’s next generation iPad.
We think Samsung is going to wait until the iPad 3 hype dies down, probably two to three weeks after it’s been out on the market, and then that’s when they’ll kick off their massive marketing blitz. At least that’s what we would do if we were in the business of making geeks foam at the mouth.
