It was back in 2010 when we told you Fujitsu and Toshiba are merging their mobile divisions to better compete on the market. That plan apparently didn’t work with Fujitsu announcing it has acquired Toshiba’s ownership stake (19.9%) in the joint venture, making the new company a wholly owned subsidiary of Fujitsu with a new name – Fujitsu Mobile Communications Limited.
The company has 300 employees and some 450 million yen (about $5.48 million) in capital though I’m sure it can pull additional resources from the Fujitsu Group when needed. The goal, as we’ve learned during Mobile World Congress, is to expand to other markets outside of Japan. To that end, they’ve prepared few waterproof high-end phones and a tablet (also waterproof). From what I’ve seen in Barcelona, Fujitsu has a solid chance to get its piece of the ever growing smartphone market, eventually providing more choice to the consumers. We’ll see how the new company structure affects those plans…
