It’s quarterly earnings week and now it’s Samsung’s turn to chime in with its Q2 2012 financial report. In the quarter, Samsung reported a record operating profit of $5.9 billion (6.72 trillion won), most of which was the result of strong smartphone and display sales. This figure is up 79 percent year over year.
Samsung’s Mobile Communications Business was the driving force in this quarter, bringing in $18 billion (20.52 trillion won) in revenue. This represents a 75 percent increase from the same quarter last year. Samsung didn’t release detailed smartphone numbers, but it did say the Galaxy S III and the Galaxy Note contributed greatly to this growth. While the handset and display business did well, profits from Samsung’s semiconductor business declined 38 percent year over year.
