Sprint confirmed on Friday that the FCC has given its approval to the merger of the US wireless carrier with Japanese carrier SoftBank. SoftBank will have majority control over Sprint and will play an integral role in Sprint’s upcoming acquisition of Clearwire.
This approval is the last government hurdle for the merger, and both Sprint and SoftBank shareholders have approved the deal. Today, Clearwire’s board will vote on the merger, which is recommended by Clearwire’s board of directors. If it gets the needed approval, Sprint should be able to close the SoftBank deal in the coming weeks.
