The mobile landscape can be a lucrative place for developers, but first they need to crack the code of monetization.

There are 900,000+ apps in Apple’s AppStore and more than a million in Google Play Store. Out of all those titles, only 80 apps generated more than $1 million in revenue during the fourth quarter of 2012.

App development is everything but affordable. Depending on the features you need, you could easily end-up spending tens of thousands of dollars. And when we know that 67% of developers aren’t breaking even, you should carefully think it through to make your investment worthwhile.

To achieve a top 15 rank in the overall iOS charts in the US you need 60,000 downloads in 24 hours. But 63% of developers have had their app downloaded 50,000 times or less overall.

There are some things you can do to “crack the code” like dedicate time and money to marketing your app, use a variety of tracking technologies to better understand user profiles and identify the best performing publishers and traffic sources, and use campaign optimization tools to analyze key performance indicators and automatically implement most effective campaign settings.

Here’s the infographic telling you more about it; prepared by the good folks of Trademob.
