Starbucks debuts “Tweet a Coffee” for buying gifts via Twitter

Starbucks with the help of Twitter announced that it will begin allowing users to send gifts to friends by way of a tweet. The new service being brewed up by both companies is called “Tweet a Coffee.” This new service is rolling out as a beta program that will start letting Twitterers send five dollar gift cards through the popular social networking site.

All folks have to do is hook their Twitter account up to their Starbucks account, then link their credit card. Once that’s done, users will have to tweet “@tweetacoffee” with the Twitter handle of the intended recipient, and that person will receive their gift card.

In order to grab the attention of people to use this new experimental program, both companies have decided to give the first 100,000 who link their accounts with their Visa cards a $5 gift card for themselves when they tweet a gift card to someone (limited to Visa card holders only).

Overall the program seems promising, as it merges the social media world with a popular retailer. Whether it works or not is something we’ll have to revisit down the road, however, we wouldn’t be surprised if Starbucks were able to pull it off.
