Instagram Unviels Hyperlapse, An iOS App That Turns Your Shaky Videos Into Smooth Timelapses

All of those videos in your Instagram feed all have one thing in common: they look like crap. It’s not the pixel quality that’s the problem, it’s the jerky, choppy nature of videos shot on mobile devices. Sure, you can shoot a video in 1080p, but without image stabilization, the pixel quality doesn’t mean a thing. Instagram is attempting to change all of that with the release of Hyperlapse, an app that stabilizes videos and turns them into beautiful, stable and smooth timelapse videos. The app, which is rolling out today is landing on iOS first, making its way to Android eventually.

Traditionally, time lapse videos depend on holding your phone or camera still while you film. Hyperlapse from Instagram features built-in stabilization technology that lets you create moving, handheld time lapses that result in a cinematic look, quality and feel—a feat that has previously only been possible with expensive equipment. – Instagram Blog

Instagram touts Hyperlapse as incredibly easy to use, allowing users to snap timelapses without even signing in to Instagram. When the app opens, it takes you straight to the camera where you can capture your masterpiece by simply tapping a button. Pick the desired speed of the shot, from 1x to 12x and hit the green check mark. Your video will be saved to your library, where it can quickly and simply be shared to Instagram.

Expect to see videos on Instagram get taken up a notch or two here soon. Check out the video below to see Hyperlapse in action.
