Samsung is preparing to shake up the foldable phone market with a new dual-device strategy. The company plans to launch two book-style foldable phones in July, including a new Galaxy Z Fold 8 Wide variant that takes a different approach to camera hardware.
This move signals Samsung’s attempt to diversify its foldable lineup and potentially reach different price points. The Galaxy Z Fold 8 Wide represents a departure from the premium, feature-packed approach that has defined Samsung’s foldable strategy since the original Galaxy Fold launched in 2019.
The Galaxy Z Fold 8 Wide will feature a simplified dual-camera setup on the rear, contrasting with the triple-camera system expected on the regular Galaxy Z Fold 8. Recent leaks reveal that the primary wide-angle camera will use an F1.8 aperture lens, while the ultrawide camera features an F1.9 aperture lens.
Both rear cameras are expected to offer 50MP resolution and will likely support autofocus and 8K 30fps video recording. The phone will also include dual 10MP front-facing cameras – one positioned on the cover display and another on the foldable inner display. Users seeking better selfies can still utilize the rear cameras when the phone is unfolded.
The simplified camera system suggests Samsung is positioning the Galaxy Z Fold 8 Wide as a more affordable alternative to the flagship Galaxy Z Fold 8. By removing the dedicated telephoto camera found on the regular model, Samsung can reduce manufacturing costs while still offering the core foldable experience that has made the Z Fold series popular among productivity-focused users.
The Galaxy Z Fold 8 Wide’s signature color will be Dark Green, though additional color options are expected at launch. This color choice continues Samsung’s trend of offering distinctive colors for its foldable devices, helping them stand out in a market where most premium phones stick to black, white, and metallic finishes.
Under the hood, both upcoming foldable phones will likely run on the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 processor, paired with at least 12GB of RAM and 256GB of internal storage. The power specifications highlight how Samsung isn’t compromising on performance despite the camera differences.
Battery capacity will differ between the models. The standard Galaxy Z Fold 8 is expected to pack a 5,000mAh battery, while the Galaxy Z Fold 8 Wide may feature a slightly smaller 4,800mAh battery. This difference could be due to internal space constraints or cost optimization efforts.
The dual-model strategy reflects broader changes in the foldable market. As the technology matures and production costs decrease, manufacturers are exploring ways to make foldable phones accessible to more consumers. Samsung’s approach mirrors what traditional smartphone makers have done for years – offering multiple variants of flagship devices to capture different market segments.
This development comes as the foldable phone market faces increasing competition from Chinese manufacturers like Honor, Xiaomi, and OnePlus, who have been aggressive with pricing while matching or exceeding Samsung’s specifications. The Galaxy Z Fold 8 Wide could be Samsung’s response to this competitive pressure.
