Motorola’s rumored Edge 70 Max has made its first official appearance, and it comes from an unlikely place. The phone has shown up in the Wireless Power Consortium (WPC) certification database, which, as 91Mobiles reported, officially confirms both the Edge 70 Max name and the device’s existence ahead of any formal announcement.
Certification filings don’t always tell the full story, but this one is more useful than most. It locks in the “Edge 70 Max” branding, confirms 25W wireless charging support, and even includes renders of the phone. Those renders are worth paying attention to, because they contradict something that leaked earlier.
A set of earlier leaks showed the Edge 70 Max with a completely flat screen and flat aluminum-style frames, which would have been a notable departure for Motorola. The Edge lineup has historically leaned on curved displays (with a few exceptions in the Neo models). Flat screens are generally better for grip and reduce accidental touches along the edges. But the WPC renders tell a different story, showing a curved display instead. The camera module design also differs slightly between the two sets of images, so there’s still some uncertainty about what the final product will look like.
What seems more settled is the internal hardware. Leaked marketing materials suggest the Edge 70 Max will run on Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8 Gen 5 chipset. If that’s accurate, it puts the Edge 70 Max in the same league as the Motorola Signature, which also uses that processor and is currently Motorola’s most premium handset. The leaked renders also point to a triple-camera setup, likely a main sensor, an ultra-wide, and a telephoto lens, though exact specs haven’t been confirmed.
On the outside, the phone is expected to come in three colors:
- Onyx Black
- Sage Green
- Glacier Blue
These will most likely be Pantone-certified, which has become a consistent part of Motorola’s branding across its mid-to-high-end lineup.
The Edge 70 Max is also notable for another reason. It’s the first phone in Motorola’s Edge series to carry the “Max” label, joining a lineup that already includes the Edge 70 Fusion, Edge 70 Pro, and Edge 70 Pro+. That name suggests Motorola is positioning it at the top of the Edge 70 family, above the Pro and Pro+ models. Whether it earns that spot will depend on the final specs, but a Snapdragon 8 Gen 5 chip and 25W wireless charging are a reasonable foundation.
No launch date has been announced yet, and some details are still in flux. But for anyone looking for a performance-focused phone within the Edge lineup, the Edge 70 Max is shaping up to be the one to watch.
