Redmi 17C 5G leak confirms it’s just a renamed Redmi 15C 5G

Xiaomi is getting ready to add another phone to its budget 5G lineup, but don’t expect anything new. A fresh Geekbench listing has confirmed that the upcoming Redmi 17C 5G shares its internal codename, “tornado,” with both the Redmi 15C 5G and the POCO C85 5G. Both of those phones are already available in multiple markets. That shared codename is a strong sign that the Redmi 17C 5G is essentially the same device wearing a new badge.

This kind of rebranding is nothing new for Xiaomi. The company already sells a 4G version of the Redmi 15C, and it has a habit of pushing the same hardware across different product lines under slightly different names. It keeps costs low, simplifies production, and fills out a portfolio without the expense of designing a new phone from scratch. For shoppers, the risk is ending up with a “new” phone that offers nothing their current device doesn’t already have.

Budget Android phones are a crowded space, and subtle rebrands can cause real confusion when buyers compare models side by side. Knowing what’s under the hood ahead of launch helps consumers make informed choices. Here’s what the leak points to for the Redmi 17C 5G.

The phone is expected to run on the MediaTek Dimensity 6300 chipset, the same processor Xiaomi has used across several of its affordable 5G phones this year. It’s not a chip built for gaming, but it handles day-to-day tasks well and keeps battery drain reasonable.

Based on what’s known from the Redmi 15C 5G, the expected specs are:

  • 6.9-inch LCD display with 720p resolution
  • 50MP main rear camera
  • 8MP front camera
  • 6,000mAh battery with 33W fast charging
  • Android 16 with Xiaomi’s HyperOS out of the box

So far, the Redmi 17C 5G is only tipped for India and global markets. There’s no word on a China launch. Pricing hasn’t leaked yet, but the Redmi 15C 5G launched in India for under $140, so the 17C is likely to land at a similar price point. Xiaomi has not confirmed a launch date.
