Motorola has announced the edge 70 max, a new phone aimed at users who spend serious time gaming, streaming, and listening to music on the go. It runs on Qualcomm’s latest Snapdragon 8 Gen 5 chip, carries a massive 7100mAh battery, and comes with a Quad HD+ display that Motorola claims is the brightest in its price category.
The device also marks a first for the brand: it is the launch device for Motorola Qira, the company’s new AI system that works across Motorola phones and Lenovo PCs and tablets. That makes the edge 70 max more than just a spec upgrade. It is the starting point for Motorola’s broader push into connected, cross-device AI.
The phone sits in a competitive space where brands are racing to offer flagship-level performance at prices below the top tier. With a 2K screen, fast wireless charging, a Sony camera sensor, and military-grade durability, the edge 70 max is clearly trying to punch above its weight class.
Performance built around Snapdragon 8 Gen 5
The Snapdragon 8 Gen 5 is the engine here, and it brings some meaningful improvements over its predecessor. Motorola cites these gains compared to the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3:
- 36% better CPU performance for faster multitasking and app loading
- 11% improvement in GPU performance for smoother high-resolution gaming
- 46% better NPU performance for on-device AI tasks
The chip is paired with up to 12GB of LPDDR5X memory and up to 1TB of storage. To keep temperatures in check during heavy use, Motorola added a 5500mm vapor chamber cooling system with liquid metal, which it says dissipates heat faster than standard cooling setups.
A 2K display that goes bright
The edge 70 max has a Quad HD+ AMOLED display with a 144Hz refresh rate and a peak brightness of 7000 nits. Motorola says this makes it the brightest display in its category. It supports over one billion colors through 10-bit and DCI-P3, and it is Pantone Validated, which means colors on screen are calibrated to match what content creators intended.
The 144Hz refresh rate cuts down on motion blur, which matters both for gaming and for general scrolling. The Extreme AMOLED panel also means deep blacks and strong contrast across all content types.
Battery life that lasts, and charges fast
The 7100mAh silicon-carbon battery is one of the bigger cells in this class of phone. Motorola earned a Gold Label from DXOMARK for battery performance, scoring 160 points. For charging, the phone supports two fast options:
- 90W TurboPower wired charging, which Motorola says delivers enough power for a full day in just 6 minutes
- 25W Qi2 magnetic wireless charging, which Motorola claims is the fastest magnetic wireless charging in its category
Both chargers are sold separately. The Qi2 support is notable because it brings MagSafe-style magnetic alignment to Android, something that is still relatively rare outside of Apple’s ecosystem.
Camera system led by Sony’s LYTIA sensor
The main camera uses a 50MP Sony LYTIA 710 sensor with optical image stabilization. Sony’s LYTIA sensors have gained a strong reputation for low-light performance, and Motorola has added AI-powered processing on top of the hardware. The full camera setup includes:
- 50MP Sony LYTIA 710 main camera with OIS and Pantone SkinTone Validated color accuracy
- 8MP ultrawide lens with a macro mode
- 32MP front camera with 4K video, AI skin optimization, and automatic group mode when rotated to landscape
Two AI camera features stand out. Photo Enhancement Engine automatically sharpens detail without the user touching any settings. Signature Style learns what kinds of photos a user tends to take and adjusts edits accordingly over time.
Design built to survive real life
The back of the phone uses matte premium glass, which Motorola says resists fingerprints and reflections better than glossy alternatives. The frame is aircraft-grade aluminum. The phone meets MIL-STD-810H military durability standards, tested across 16 categories and 14 procedures, covering extreme temperatures, humidity, and altitude.
It also has IP68 and IP69 ratings for dust and water resistance, and the screen uses Corning Gorilla Glass 7i, which offers twice the drop and scratch resistance compared to standard aluminosilicate glass. Motorola says the phone can survive drops from up to 1.8 meters.
The phone is available in three colors, all developed with Pantone Color Institute:
- Pantone Aqua Gray, a green-gray tone
- Pantone Dark Shadow, a near-black shade
- Pantone Ice Melt, a pale blue
Motorola Qira: Cross-device AI that remembers context
The edge 70 max is the first phone to ship with Motorola Qira, an AI system that works across Motorola and Lenovo devices. It pulls together several existing tools, including moto ai, Lenovo AI Now, Creator Zone, and Learning Zone, into one shared system with a common knowledge base.
The key idea is continuity. Instead of having to re-enter prompts or re-explain context when switching between a phone and a laptop, Qira carries that information across devices. It runs in the background with user permission. Here is what each main feature does:
- Chat Mode: Ask questions or take actions using context pulled from your work and devices
- Next Move: Suggests logical next steps based on what you are currently working on
- Creator Zone: A space to generate and edit images across devices, so a project can start on one screen and continue on another
- Pay Attention: Captures key points during meetings or conversations, then generates summaries and follow-up suggestions
- Catch Me Up: Summarizes missed notifications, messages, and updates after time away from a device
Qira requires a Lenovo or Moto ID and Smart Connect to work across devices. Devices with 12GB of memory get Qira at launch. The 8GB version will receive it through a software update within a few months.
Sustainability baked into the build
Motorola made several recycled material commitments with this phone. The packaging is plastic-free, fully recyclable, and uses soy-ink printing. Inside the device itself, 41% of the metals in components are recycled, 85% of the plastics in the bottom bracket are recycled, and 70% of the plastics in the front camera bracket are recycled. The focus on durability, from the tougher glass to the large battery designed for long-term use, is also framed as part of the company’s effort to extend product lifespan and reduce waste.
