Vivo may be bringing back its S-series to India for the first time since 2019. According to 91Mobiles, tipster Yogesh Brar says the Vivo S2 is expected to launch in early August and could go on sale during the Independence Day sales window. That would put it right in the middle of one of the biggest smartphone buying seasons in the country.
The phone has already appeared on the BIS certification website, which typically signals that a launch is close. Brar also reiterated earlier leaks suggesting the S2 will be priced between Rs 45,000 and Rs 50,000. If that holds, it marks a sharp shift from where the S-series started. The original Vivo S1 launched in 2019 at Rs 17,990, sitting firmly in the mainstream mid-range. The S2, by contrast, is being positioned as a premium mid-range device.
One thing worth clarifying: this is not the same as the Vivo S50 sold in China. In Vivo’s home market, the S-series is actually the equivalent of the V-series sold in India. The S2 being planned for India is a separate product entirely.
The pricing puts the S2 in direct competition with some well-known names. Phones like the OnePlus 15R and iQOO 15R sit in the same bracket, and buyers in that range tend to have strong options. The challenge for Vivo is that it already sells the V70 FE in this segment, starting at Rs 41,999. That phone comes with a strong set of specs:
- 6.83-inch 1.5K AMOLED display with 120Hz refresh rate
- MediaTek Dimensity 7360 Turbo chipset
- 7,000mAh battery with 90W fast charging
- 200MP primary camera
If the S2 launches at a similar or higher price, Vivo will need a clear reason for buyers to choose it over the V70 FE. That is the real question here, and it is one Vivo has not answered yet. The company has not confirmed any specifications for the S2, and earlier leaks have only described it in broad terms as a mid-range device.
Timing the launch around Independence Day makes commercial sense. Indian brands and retailers typically run heavy promotions during the period, with exchange deals and discounts that push buyers who have been sitting on the fence. Launching a new product into that environment gives it better visibility and a stronger opening weekend.
Based on Vivo’s past approach with the original S1, the S2 could lean into camera hardware, design or software to stand out. The S1 was notable in its day for bringing an AMOLED screen, an in-display fingerprint sensor and a 32MP selfie camera to a price point where those features were rare. Replicating that kind of value proposition is much harder now. Differentiation at Rs 45,000 to Rs 50,000 takes more than a spec bump, especially when competitors at that price are already packing large batteries, high-resolution cameras and fast processors.
For anyone considering a phone in the Rs 40,000 to Rs 50,000 range right now, it is probably worth waiting until August. Seeing what the S2 actually brings to the table, and how it stacks up against the V70 FE, the OnePlus 15R and the iQOO 15R, will give a much clearer picture before committing to a purchase.
