AT&T just dropped $23 billion on spectrum and it’s a big deal for your 5G signal

Twenty-three billion dollars. That’s what AT&T just paid to get its hands on spectrum licenses from EchoStar, and the deal is officially done. The company announced the closing of the transaction this week, and the numbers behind it are worth paying attention to.

AT&T picked up roughly 50 MHz of spectrum in total. That breaks down to about 30 MHz of 3.45 GHz mid-band and 20 MHz of 600 MHz low-band, covering virtually every market in the US. Mid-band is the sweet spot for 5G, good range and solid speeds. Low-band travels further and punches through walls better. Getting both in one deal is a genuinely strong move.

So why does this matter to you? More spectrum means more capacity. When everyone in a stadium or a city center is on their phone at once, networks get congested. This gives AT&T more room to breathe, which should translate to faster download speeds and fewer dropped connections in busy areas. AT&T also says the added spectrum will help it build out better uplink performance, which matters for video calls, uploads, and anything AI-related running on the network.

This fits into a broader race among US carriers to stockpile spectrum before it runs out. T-Mobile has been sitting on a big mid-band lead since its Sprint merger. This acquisition puts AT&T in a much stronger position to compete. Whether customers actually feel the difference in daily use is the real test, and that will take time to show up.
