Samsung’s foldable phones just broke records in India, and the numbers are wild

Samsung didn’t just launch three new foldable phones in India. It basically rewrote what a successful foldable launch looks like. According to Samsung India, the Galaxy Z Fold8 Ultra, Galaxy Z Fold8, and Galaxy Z Flip8 crossed 271,000 pre-orders within 72 hours of going live on July 22. For context, the Z Fold7 and Z Flip7 needed a full 15 days to hit the same number last year. That’s not incremental growth. That’s a completely different trajectory.

But here’s the stat that actually tells the bigger story: 45% of those pre-orders came from Tier 2 cities and smaller. Not Mumbai. Not Delhi. Places that weren’t even on the foldable phone radar a couple of years ago. That’s a real shift. Foldable phones are no longer a flex purchase for people in big metros. They’re spreading, and Samsung is clearly riding that wave hard enough to feel confident matching the pre-order numbers from its Galaxy S26 series earlier this year.

So what are people actually buying? The Galaxy Z Fold8 is the middle ground option, priced at INR 179,999. It’s Samsung’s lightest Z Fold yet at 201 grams, which matters a lot when you’re carrying a device this size all day. The cover display runs a 10:16 ratio that feels like a normal phone, and the inner 4:3 screen opens up for multitasking, reading, and streaming. Under the hood it’s running the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5, paired with a 4800mAh battery. Samsung also reworked the hinge area with what it calls Flex Titanium technology, which should mean a less visible crease over time. Camera-wise, dual 50MP shooters and a Dual Recording mode that captures both sides of a scene at once round things out.

The Galaxy Z Fold8 Ultra steps things up to INR 199,999. The main display goes to 8 inches, the battery climbs to 5000mAh, and the charging setup is a new dual-path 45W architecture. It unfolds to just 4.1mm thick and weighs 215 grams. This one is clearly aimed at people who want a productivity machine that replaces a tablet.

The Galaxy Z Flip8, at INR 124,999, is the accessible entry point into the lineup. It’s Samsung’s slimmest and lightest Flip to date, and the big change here is the FlexWindow. That cover screen is now a proper AI interface, not just a glorified notification panel. You get Now Brief for daily updates, access to Gemini without even opening the phone, and voice-activated connected actions. The camera also gets a 50MP sensor with Samsung’s ProVisual Engine handling portraits.

Across all three devices, Galaxy AI is doing a lot of the heavy lifting. Features like Now Brief, Now Nudge, and Gemini Notebook are all built to take advantage of the larger foldable screens. The AI integration also extends to Galaxy Watch Ultra2 and Galaxy Watch9 for connected cross-device experiences throughout the day.

On privacy, Samsung is leaning into Knox hard, with Personal Data Engine, Knox Vault, and new One UI 9 transparency tools giving users more visibility over what the AI is actually doing with their data. That’s a smart move given how much scrutiny on-device AI is getting right now.

All three phones are available with a 30-month, 0-down payment, no-cost EMI option, which is almost certainly a big reason Tier 2 India jumped in so hard. When a Rs. 1.24 lakh phone becomes a manageable monthly payment, the audience for it gets a lot bigger. That’s the real story here. Foldables are growing up, and India is growing with them.

  • Galaxy Z Flip8: INR 124,999
  • Galaxy Z Fold8: INR 179,999
  • Galaxy Z Fold8 Ultra: INR 199,999
  • All models available on 30-month, 0-down payment, no-cost EMI
