The chips inside this fall’s flagship phones haven’t even shipped yet, and TSMC is already two generations ahead. That’s the kind of lead that should make Qualcomm, MediaTK, and Apple engineers lose sleep, even if they’re also the ones who will eventually benefit from it.
According to Android Headlines, TSMC has completed development and verification of its angstrom-class A16 process, which clocks in at 1.6nm, and mass production is set to kick off in Q4 2026. To put that in perspective, the Snapdragon 8 Elite 2, Apple A20, and MediaTek Dimensity 9500 are all expected to land on 2nm this fall. TSMC is already past that.
The performance numbers are real and worth paying attention to. Compared to its enhanced 2nm process, the 1.6nm node offers 8 to 10% better computing speed, 15 to 20% lower power consumption, and 8 to 10% higher chip density. Those aren’t massive headline numbers, but in chip terms, those gains compound fast, especially across millions of devices.
The architecture behind it is genuinely clever. TSMC places the power network on the back side of the chip, powering transistors directly through what are called Vertical Backside Contacts. By separating the power wiring from the signal wiring, the design cuts down on bottlenecks during data transmission. Less interference, better efficiency, faster compute. It’s elegant engineering, not just a marketing shrink.
So who gets these chips first? Not you. At least not right away. The 1.6nm process will go straight into AI semiconductors and high-performance computing hardware. Data centers before smartphones, basically. Most consumers will be running 1.6nm chips in cloud services long before they ever hold one in their hand.
But the bigger picture here matters. TSMC is already eyeing 1.4nm as its next step, which is the process that will actually change what your phone can do. The fact that TSMC is this far ahead of every competitor, Intel, Samsung Foundry, and anyone else trying to catch up, means the chip supply chain for the next few years runs almost entirely through one company. That’s a strategic reality the whole industry is already living with, and it’s only getting more pronounced.
For phone buyers, the practical win comes later. The 2nm chips this fall will already be a solid jump in performance and battery life. The 1.6nm generation, when it does land in phones, probably around 2027 or 2028, should push things further. TSMC isn’t slowing down, and that’s good news for everyone who carries a smartphone.
