Samsung is doing something that phone makers rarely do: giving last year’s flagship a feature that was supposed to make this year’s model look better. That’s worth paying attention to.
According to SamMobile, the Galaxy S25 Ultra is set to receive the Virtual Reflector feature with its One UI 9.0 update. This tool was originally introduced on the Galaxy S26 Ultra earlier in 2026, and it’s designed to improve portrait photography by letting you control the direction and intensity of light on your subject. Tipster Fahad Ali Javed flashed an internal One UI 9.0 build onto an S25 Ultra and found the feature already sitting inside the Expert RAW app.
So what does Virtual Reflector actually do? It mimics the physical reflectors that professional photographers use in studio setups. When you’re shooting someone in uneven or harsh lighting, the tool lets you virtually bounce light back onto the subject to fill in shadows and balance the shot. It’s a genuinely useful concept, not just a filter with a fancy name.
Inside Expert RAW, the feature gives you real control. Here’s what you can adjust:
- Light color, including options like golden and silver tones
- Reflectance strength, so you can go subtle or dramatic
- Light angle, controlled through a circular orb interface
That level of control puts it closer to desktop editing software than a typical phone camera toggle. And the fact that it’s landing in Expert RAW, Samsung’s pro-tier camera app, tells you this isn’t a casual point-and-shoot addition. It’s aimed at people who actually think about how light works.
The bigger picture here is interesting. Samsung has been under pressure to justify annual upgrades when the differences between generations keep shrinking. Backporting a headline S26 Ultra feature to the S25 Ultra is a goodwill move, but it also raises a fair question: if S25 Ultra hardware can run this, why wasn’t it there from day one? Still, getting a real camera upgrade through a software update is never a bad thing. S25 Ultra owners have reason to look forward to One UI 9.0.
