Poco F9 Ultra: flagship power, midrange price, and a battery that embarrasses most top-shelf phones

An 8,000mAh battery in a phone under $800. Let that sink in for a second. While most flagship phones in 2026 are still shipping with 5,000mAh cells and calling it a day, Poco just dropped the F9 Ultra with nearly double the capacity and a spec sheet that should make some premium brands nervous.

Xiaomi’s sub-brand Poco has announced the F9 Ultra as its second near-flagship in as many years. It won’t be coming to the US, which is genuinely frustrating, but what it tells us about where Chinese smartphone makers are operating right now is worth paying attention to. The value these brands are packing into sub-$800 devices is starting to make Western flagship pricing look pretty hard to defend.

The display is one of the first things that jumps out. A 6.9-inch AMOLED panel running at 185Hz is not something you typically see outside of dedicated gaming phones like the ASUS ROG Phone 9 Pro. Poco is putting that kind of screen in a general-use device at a fraction of the cost. And yes, it also comes with 2.1-channel Bose audio. The Bose branding on the camera module is still there, but the cameras themselves are now flush with the back panel, which gives the whole thing a cleaner, more polished look compared to last year’s F8 Ultra.

On the chip side, the F9 Ultra runs on the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5, the same processor found in the F8 Ultra. Qualcomm hasn’t dropped a successor yet, so Poco didn’t have a newer option to reach for. That said, the Gen 5 is still one of the fastest mobile chips around, so this isn’t a downgrade by any stretch. Poco also includes its own VisionBoost D8 chipset, which uses AI to sharpen image detail and smooth out graphics. This was in the F8 Ultra too, and while the marketing language around it is a bit much, the real-world results on last year’s model were solid enough that it’s not a gimmick worth dismissing.

The camera system is genuinely impressive on paper. Here’s what you’re getting:

  • 200-megapixel main camera
  • 5x optical-zoom periscope telephoto lens
  • 50-megapixel ultrawide camera

A 200MP main sensor gives Poco a lot of flexibility for detail and cropping, and a proper periscope telephoto at 5x is something many phones in this price range skip entirely. So the camera hardware here isn’t filler.

Pricing is still being finalized, with a global launch event set to confirm exact numbers, but Poco told journalists the F9 Ultra will come in under $800. At that price point, with this spec list, it’s the kind of phone that forces a real conversation about whether spending $1,200 on a flagship still makes sense for most people. And that Dark Cherry red colorway? In a year where color is clearly having a moment, that one’s going to turn heads.

Still, the US absence stings. Poco continues to ignore the American market, which limits how much pressure it actually puts on brands like Samsung and Apple at home. But for anyone willing to import, or just looking to understand where smartphone hardware is heading, the F9 Ultra is a very clear signal.
