Xiaomi just called its shot. The company has confirmed the Xiaomi 18 Fold ahead of its September 7 autumn flagship event, and it’s not just showing off specs. It’s introducing a whole design philosophy it calls ‘mid-fold.’ That’s a real category claim, and it’s worth paying attention to.
So what does mid-fold actually mean? Xiaomi’s argument is that the foldable phone market has a problem. Big book-style foldables give you a great screen when open, but most people end up staring at the smaller outer display most of the day. Compact foldables are easier to carry but usually sacrifice something important along the way. The 18 Fold is Xiaomi’s attempt to land right in the middle. Folded, it’s roughly passport-sized and light enough to use one-handed. Open it, and you get a 7.58-inch main display with an aspect ratio tuned for multitasking and video. The outer screen comes in at 5.38 inches, which is genuinely usable rather than just decorative.
The design itself looks sharp in the teaser video. Xiaomi showed it off in red, with a horizontal camera strip across the back housing three cameras and an LED flash. Leica is involved in the camera system, which Xiaomi confirmed on its website. That partnership has been around for a few years now across Xiaomi’s flagship line, and the results have been solid. So this isn’t just a logo slap for marketing points.
Under the hood, the 18 Fold runs on Xiaomi’s in-house Xring O3 chip, which already showed up on Geekbench before the announcement. The phone also ships with Surge OS 4 and Xiaomi’s MiMo on-device AI model. And it’s set to be one of the first phones using CXMT’s LPDDR6 memory, which puts it at the front of the pack on the hardware side. Xiaomi is also introducing a new ‘dragon bone’ hinge design along with a simulation-based durability testing system for the fold mechanism.
Lu Weibing, who runs Xiaomi’s smartphone division, described the 18 Fold as the most advanced phone in the entire Xiaomi lineup, meant to stand alongside the regular numbered flagships rather than play second fiddle to them. That’s a confident position. Foldables have often been treated as novelty products or niche picks, but Xiaomi is pushing the 18 Fold as a genuine flagship contender.
The broader context here matters. Foldable phones are slowly moving from ‘impressive demo unit’ to ‘phone people actually buy.’ Samsung has dominated this space for years, but Chinese brands have been closing the gap fast, with more aggressive pricing and strong hardware. A Xiaomi foldable running a custom chip, paired with Leica cameras and the latest memory standard, is exactly the kind of product that keeps pressure on everyone else in the category.
At the September 7 event, the 18 Fold won’t be alone. Xiaomi is also launching the N70 Pro, N70 Max, N90 Max, and the Xiaomi Pad 9 Pro Max, which also runs on the Xring O3 chip. Pricing hasn’t been shared yet, but that’s what September 7 is for. Mark the date.
