Huawei Mate XT 2 teardown reveals what’s really powering that wild tri-fold

Someone cracked open a Huawei Mate XT 2 almost immediately after launch, and honestly, good. Because the most interesting thing about this tri-fold phone isn’t the folding party trick. It’s what Huawei quietly stuffed inside it. According to Huawei Central, Weibo blogger Yang Changshun got his hands on the Mate XT 2 and tore the whole thing down, giving us our first real look at the evolution of Huawei’s in-house Kirin silicon.

The Mate XT 2 is Huawei’s follow-up to last year’s Mate XT, which was already one of the most ambitious phone designs anyone had tried. Three panels. Two hinges. A device that unfolds into something closer to a small tablet than a phone. It was flashy, it was expensive, and it made people stop scrolling. The sequel keeps that same wild form factor but comes with what appears to be a meaningfully updated chip under the hood.

That chip is the story here. Huawei has been fighting through chip restrictions for years now, cut off from TSMC’s advanced nodes and forced to get creative with domestic manufacturing through SMIC. The original Mate XT shipped with the Kirin 9010, which was impressive given the circumstances but still trailing behind what Qualcomm and Apple were doing. The teardown of the Mate XT 2 points to continued chip development, suggesting Huawei hasn’t given up on closing that gap through its own engineering pipeline.

This matters because Huawei’s chip situation is unlike any other major phone brand right now. Every design choice, every efficiency gain, every architectural tweak has to happen within tight constraints. So when a teardown shows signs of Kirin evolution, it’s a signal that the company is making real progress, not just recycling old silicon and hoping nobody notices.

The Mate XT 2 itself is a premium device in every sense. It targets buyers who want the most technically ambitious phone on the market and are willing to pay accordingly. Pricing sits at the high end of the market, which is expected for a tri-fold. Availability is currently focused on China, with no confirmed global rollout.

Here’s what makes this teardown worth paying attention to beyond the chip:

  • The internal layout has to accommodate two hinge mechanisms, which leaves almost no room for error in component placement
  • Battery and cooling design in tri-folds are genuinely complex engineering problems
  • Huawei’s ability to miniaturize and pack components into this form factor says a lot about its manufacturing capabilities right now

The broader picture is this: Huawei is still here, still building, and still pushing form factors that most brands won’t touch. Whether the Mate XT 2 is worth buying depends a lot on where you live and what software ecosystem you’re comfortable with. But as a piece of hardware? It’s hard not to respect what’s going on inside it. The teardown just makes that clearer.
