Sometimes the most interesting chip news has nothing to do with raw performance. The MediaTek Helio G99+ isn’t here to beat benchmarks. It’s here because the global memory market is shifting, and someone had to do something about it.
MediaTek has listed the Helio G99+ on its official website, and on the surface, it looks almost identical to the original G99. Same 6nm TSMC build. Same CPU setup: two Arm Cortex-A76 cores running at 2.2 GHz and six Cortex-A55 cores at 2.0 GHz. Same Mali-G57 MC2 GPU, same UFS 2.2 storage, same 108MP camera support, and the same Cat-13 4G modem with dual VoLTE. So what actually changed?
Memory support. That’s it. The G99+ drops LPDDR4X in favor of LPDDR5X, jumping from a max bandwidth of 4266 Mbps to 5500 Mbps. That’s a real speed bump, but the bigger story is why it happened at all.
The global DRAM market has been quietly reshuffling for a while now. Major memory makers are moving production capacity toward higher-margin products like HBM, LPDDR5X, and DDR5. Older LPDDR4X production lines are being wound down or repurposed, which has tightened supply and pushed prices up. For phone makers building affordable 4G devices in price-sensitive regions, that’s a real problem. If the memory they’ve been relying on gets harder to source, costs go up and margins get squeezed.
The G99+ is MediaTek’s answer to that. By adding LPDDR5X support to an already proven platform, it gives manufacturers more flexibility to source whatever memory is cheapest and most available at any given moment. They don’t have to redesign their phones around a brand-new chip. They just keep using the G99 ecosystem they already know, with the memory market’s new reality baked in.
This fits a pattern MediaTek has followed with the G99 family before. The G100 and G200 both made incremental tweaks, whether to camera capability or GPU configuration, without overhauling the core architecture. The G99+ is the same kind of move. It’s practical, not flashy.

So no, the Helio G99+ is not exciting in the way a flagship chip announcement is exciting. But it’s a smart, low-drama move that shows MediaTek is paying attention to where real-world supply chains are heading. Sometimes that’s exactly what the market needs.
