Apple is paying Samsung $250 per foldable display, and Samsung gets a 3-year exclusive

Two hundred and fifty dollars. Per screen. That’s what Apple is reportedly shelling out to Samsung Display for every inner folding panel that goes into the iPhone Duo, and frankly, it makes the price tag on that phone make a whole lot more sense.

The figure comes from Weibo user Momentary Digital, who also claims that Samsung Display has locked in a three-year exclusive supply agreement with Apple for the M16 OLED used in the iPhone Duo. According to Android Headlines, this makes the inner display one of the most expensive core components in the entire device. When you consider that the display is roughly 12.5% of the phone’s total cost, Apple clearly didn’t cheap out here.

And that tracks. The M16 OLED is Samsung’s latest folding panel, and Apple is reportedly stacking 10 layers into it, including a nano-texture finish. That nano-texture layer is the same technology Apple already uses on its higher-end MacBook Pros, and it’s doing real work inside the Duo. Early hands-on impressions from Apple Park are calling the crease the least visible on any foldable released so far. It’s not completely gone, but it’s apparently close enough that people who held the device walked away impressed, not disappointed.

Apple sourcing from Samsung isn’t new. The two companies have had a complicated but deeply entrenched supply relationship for years, covering displays across iPhones and iPads. Apple also pulls displays from Sharp, BOE, and LG Display for its Mac lineup, but for mobile, Samsung has consistently been the go-to for its best panels. A three-year exclusive deal for the Duo just cements that further, and it’s a significant win for Samsung Display at a time when the broader Samsung Mobile division has been dealing with its own headaches around the RAM shortage.

The bigger picture here is what this means for the foldable market overall. The iPhone Duo is expected to shake up the category fast, with some analysts predicting it could become the top-selling foldable within its first year. If that happens, Samsung Display wins big, moving serious volume on premium panels while competitors like BOE and LG sit on the sidelines for at least three years. It’s a smart lock-in for both sides. Apple gets supply certainty on its most complex component, and Samsung gets a guaranteed high-volume, high-margin customer.

There are a few things worth keeping in mind as the hype builds:

  • The M16 OLED is Samsung’s newest folding panel technology
  • Apple uses 10 layers in the display, including the nano-texture finish
  • Samsung Display holds a three-year exclusive supply deal for this panel
  • At $250 per unit, the inner display is one of the priciest components in the phone
  • Early hands-on reactions from Apple Park praised the crease reduction significantly

Pre-orders for the iPhone Duo don’t open until October 16, so there’s about a month to decide if you’re ready to commit. But between the display specs and the early buzz out of Apple Park, Apple’s first foldable is shaping up to be genuinely interesting, not just a status symbol. Whether the final price makes it worth it for most people is another question entirely.
