Huawei Mate 90 sells 528,000 units in 18 days

Half a million phones in 18 days. That’s the kind of number most brands only dream about, and Huawei just pulled it off with the Mate 90 series.

According to Huawei Central, the top-tier models have shipped 528,000 units so far and still rank first in the market. The series has only been out for about half a month, so this isn’t a slow-burn success. People walked into stores and bought it. Fast.

Now, a quick reality check. Shipments are not the same as units in customers’ hands, and the figure comes through a Huawei-focused outlet, so treat it as a strong signal rather than a audited sales receipt. Still, ranking first in a market this crowded is hard to fake, and demand clearly looks high.

Why does this matter? Because Huawei’s comeback story has been building for a couple of years now. After the sanctions hit, the company lost its footing in premium phones almost overnight. Since then it has rebuilt with its own chips, its own software, and a loyal home audience that wants a homegrown flagship. The Mate line has always been Huawei’s showpiece, the phone where it throws its best hardware and camera work at the wall. A strong launch here says the rebuild is working.

It also puts pressure on rivals. In China, the premium segment is a brutal fight, and Apple has been the default pick for plenty of high-end buyers. When a domestic flagship grabs the top spot this quickly, Apple, Xiaomi, and others have to respond with sharper pricing, better trade-in offers, or faster hardware cycles. That’s good news if you like discounts.

And there’s the bigger trend. Chinese shoppers are leaning toward local brands more than they used to, and software ecosystems are a big part of that. Huawei’s HarmonyOS push gives people a reason to buy more than one device from the same company, which makes each phone sale stickier.

My take? The numbers are impressive, but the real test comes after the launch rush. Early buyers are the faithful. Month two and month three will show whether the Mate 90 can win over people who aren’t already in the Huawei camp. If sales hold up then, this is a proper flagship hit, not just a loud opening weekend.

Either way, 528,000 in 18 days is hard to ignore. Huawei is back in the conversation, and rivals know it.
