Dell Streak to join the Android party on July 19th?

While AT&T is gearing up to launch the Samsung Captivate (Samsung Galaxy S), the carrier may be planning to launch the AT&T Dell Streak as an Android alternative the following day.

The Dell Streak, coming to market with its 5-inch display may sway some people from the Samsung Captivate, what with its extra screen real estate. Unfortunately, there are drawbacks to Dell’s inaugural Android phone for AT&T – the Streak is only running on Android 1.6 OS, which for most isn’t going to cut it.

The Streak will receive the Android 2.2 Froyo update, although it may take quite a while before users see such update. Still, the introduction of the Dell Streak just a day after the launch of the Samsung Captivate is going to give AT&T two strong Android devices in its smartphone lineup. No, you probably won’t be able to side load applications like most other Android devices, but if you wanted to stay with AT&T, at least you have some good options for you.

Both smartphones will be the best Android devices the carrier has ever offered, and the screen size difference (Captivate= 4-inches, Streak= 5-inches) might end up being the determining factor for many. On the one hand, the Captivate’s gorgeous 4 inch Super AMOLED display may be a deciding factor over the Streak’s regular LCD display. But, there are those that are going to prefer more screen real estate to actual picture quality.

Unlike the Captivate, the Streak sports two camera for those who want to do some video chatting. There are give and takes for both devices, but I think I’d still go for the Captivate if I were an AT&T customer.

So if you’re in the market for a new AT&T Android smartphone, you will soon have two solid devices to choose from, if this rumor pans out, of course. Here’s to AT&T for finally give their customers some respectable Android smartphones. Now if they’d just rethink the application situation.
