The Nokia N8, announced back in April, is starting to show signs that it’s finally going to hit the market. The N8 popped up on Nokia’s Italian site and is available for preorder for the low low price of only 470 EUR, or roughly $610. That’s your typical smartphone price here in Europe, no surprises.
For those who forgot the specifications: 12 megapixel camera, Xenon flash, 3.5 inch capacitive OLED screen with a resolution of 640 x 360 pixels, 13 mm thick, 135 gram weight, and an anodized aluminium body in your choice of silver, grey, orange, blue and green. This is Nokia’s first 12 megapixel device, and it’s also their first Symbian^3 smartphone. The N8 is also, as far as I know, the first smartphone to support all 5 international 3G frequencies: 850/900/1700/1900/2100 MHz. It does 720p HD video recording, has HDMI out, and about the only bad thing about this thing is the non user removable battery.
If this puppy shipped with Android I’d buy 2 in different colors, probably grey and green, but alas there’s only so much I can say about Symbian. We’ll be keeping an eye out on the N8, trying our best to score a review unit as early as possible, and to check out what our friends in the tech press have to say about this device. Just last night I was out with a few friends and spotted a girl with a Nokia N97 Mini. I asked her what she thought of it, and she said it was the first Nokia she’s purchased in years that she regretted buying. Of course numbers don’t lie, and Nokia has maintained their 41% market share in the smartphone space according to their Q2 figures, but strangly enough they didn’t break down the number of Nseries and Eseries devices shipped during the quarter.
Is there something we should know about that you’re not willing to tell us, Nokia?
Oh and one more thing, check out the image samples from the Nokia N8, but be warned, you may need to pick your jaw up off the floor.
