Massachusetts Transport Agency launches mobile parking payment service in partnership with Parkmobile

Parkmobile - the company that enables mobile payments for parking

We covered Parkmobile for quite a few times on IntoMobile. Their latest effort is to provide mobile parking payments in Massachusetts in partnership with Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority (MBTA).

As you know, the idea is to allow drivers to bypass pesky cash deposit boxes and pay instead from their mobile phones.

Users can either send a text message, make a phone call or use a dedicated smartphone app to pay for the parking. However, registration is required for using the service and that’s something I have a problem with. As I ranted in my previous posts when talked about Parkmobile, in most places around the world, all you have to do is send your license plate number to some number and you’re done. Registration is not required cause it doesn’t make sense – it’s important you’ve paid for the service, right?

Anyway, the new payment system covers 72 car parks along the commuter rail system, which have a total of 25,000 to 30,000 parking spaces. And already more than 1,000 people have signed up to use the new payment program…
