Verizon Testing New Voice and SMS Plan in Southern California, “Rev It Up”

We’re hearing from a trusty Verizon Wireless source of ours that Big Red is testing a new plan today in Southern California called Rev It Up. While Verizon still reigns as the number one carrier in the nation, and it has an army of desirable smartphones, but it’s looking to secure that spot by offering more attractively priced plans.

The Rev It Up plan is starting today, and while it’s only regional, our source tells us if it becomes a success, it will become a nationwide offering. Unlimited voice and SMS will go down to $69.99 from $89.99, and the unlimited voice/SMS/data plans will drop from $119.99 to just $99.99 (like Sprint, or Helio if anyone actually remembers).

The offer is for a limited time only, but we’re hearing that if it becomes a success in SoCal, it just might be offered nationwide. The plans are a great deal, although if you’re buying a new smartphone you’ll not qualify for the $69.99 plan as you’re required to have a data package as well.

We’re thinking that these new plans and tests, as Verizon did last month with Texas and Louisiana, could be in preparation for something big (i.e. the end of all-you-can-eat data and the introduction of tiered data plans). This way data caps won’t be such a sudden shock to customers who aren’t in the know.

Anyone in SoCal ready to rush into a two-year agreement with Verizon? Existing customers, fret not, you can switch to these new plans regardless of how far you are into your contract. Do note that you have to live within Southern California, however, and you’ll be okay.
