According to some recent DigiTimes research, the global smartphone market is said to grow 57% this year, to 280 million from 178 million last year. The report also goes on to say that Android will see the largest growth over all. Anyone surprised?
It’s no surprise that Android will grow more than any other mobile OS out there this year. The OS is still in its infancy, coming from just one device, the T-Mobile G1 in October of 2008, to the deluge of devices that have since flooded the market. Android has a lot to gain, since it’s a little late to the mobile OS game, but that hasn’t stopped it from becoming one of the top dogs in the mobile industry.
According to the research,
Android’s share of the worldwide smartphone market has risen from less than 5% in 2009 to 13.8% in the first half of 2010 and is projected to reach 24.5% in the second half to become the second most popular smartphone platform, according to Lin. Shipments of Android-based smartphones are estimated to jump 561% from a year ago to more than 55 million units in 2010.
So, not only is Android going through the growing pains of being a younger mobile OS, but it’s pretty much crushing it’s competition while it’s on its way to the top. Android isn’t just growing, it’s exploding. Nothing really seems like it will stop the OS from world domination, and that’s both slightly creepy and awe-inspiring at the same time. With the OS being thrown on a different type of device almost every week, it’ll likely be in your life and you won’t even know it.
With Gingerbread on its way, the next version of Android will breath new life into the OS, if what we’re hearing holds up, that is. With new mobile tech rapidly advancing, and Android becoming the mobile OS of choice for many companies, even a Verizon iPhone isn’t likely to stop it.
