The Samsung Galaxy Tab is one Android tablet that we expect to hit the shelves sooner than many of the most anticipated tablet devices we’re looking forward to seeing later this year and early next year. We may not have any Galaxy Tab hardware readily available just yet, but the firmware for the Android tablet has already been leaked, which gives us more information as to what we can expect as far as hardware goes.
The firmware comes from the European version of the tablet, but we doubt that the hardware and software will differ too much when the tablet goes live on this side of the pond. Some things that we can expect to see from the tablet are:
- Android 2.2 Froyo OS
- 480 x 800 resolution display
- Rear-facing camera at 2048 x 1536 resolution
- Front-facing camera 240 x 320 resolution
- 1 Ghz S5PC110 Hummingbird
- Adobe Flash 10.1 Player
- GPS, WiFi, Bluetooth
- Swype
- JavaScript 1.5 support
We don’t know if a Super AMOLED display will ship with the device, but we won’t be surprised if it doesn’t. It’ll likely be too expensive to produce 7-inch Super AMOLED displays, and we already know how hard it is to produce regular AMOLED displays, so we’re not expecting to see the Galaxy Tab sporting Super AMOLED. If the specs above turn out to be true, I’m actually going be a little annoyed. The display retains the same screen resolution as the Galaxy S line, even with the three extra inches of screen real estate on the Tab. That’s a deal breaker for me, unfortunately, as the Galaxy Tab was my fall-back tablet if the Adam was delayed any longer than November.
Other than the screen resolution, though, the Galaxy Tab hits the sweet spot in many areas. The 7 inch screen may just be the perfect size for a tablet, and the Hummingbird CPU on the Tab should ensure a very snappy experience and unrivaled GPU performance. Not only that, I am really looking forward to see how Swype performs on a tablet. Add in Flash and Froyo, and even with the lower screen resolution, the Galaxy Tab just may be a winner.
