The Nokia C6, arguably a Nokia N97, but in a hideous and ancient looking body, just got a firmware upgrade and it’s also on sale at Dell for $259, so how’s that for an awesome start to the week? The firmware update, version 11.0.029, brings about added stability to the web browser with over 250 bug fixes, a RAM leak that was plaguing the home screen widgets has been plugged, the music player’s database no longer takes centuries to index new songs, Exchange calendar support has been improved, and issues with locking and unlocking the phone have been resolved.
That’s a hell of an upgrade for a device that only recently, as in less than a month ago, started shipping. Now I don’t know whether to praise Nokia for being so quick to update the C6, or slam them for not delaying the release by a week or two so that shipping devices didn’t experience any of the issues mentioned above. It’s a double edged sword. Thanks to over the air firmware upgrades, and user data preservations, the update should go out smoothly, but customers who purchased an operator variant … I kind of pity you right now.

As much as I slam Symbian for being so out of date, having a 3.2 inch screen, 5 megapixel camera, GPS, full QWERTY keyboard, and WiFi for half the cost of a Google Nexus One is a steal if you’re the type of person who prefers to buy devices unlocked. Keep it for a year and then upgrade to Android, MeeGo, or whatever else will be on the market in August 2011.
