Sprint Samsung Epic 4G Galaxy S review Android 2.1 Eclair

If you can’t wait to get your hands on the Samsung Epic 4G for Sprint tomorrow, you’ll be happy to know that the carrier’s stores will be opening early to accommodate demand for this new Android superphone.

What’s all the fuss about? Well, the Sprint Epic 4G is the carrier’s version of the Samsung Galaxy S Android lineup – others include the AT&T Captivate, T-Mobile Vibrant and the upcoming Verizon Fascinate – and these are all pretty good phones. Each sports a 4-inch Super AMOLED display (absolutely gorgeous, too), a 1 GHz Hummingbird processor, WiFI, 3G, GPS and all the goodies you’d expect from a high-end Android phone.

The Sprint Epic 4G stands out from the pack by having a full, slide-out physical QWERTY keyboard. As the name suggests, you’ll also be able to access the carrier’s WiMax networks for boosted mobile data speeds. This makes the Epic 4G the second phone capable of using WiMax in the United States, as Sprint’s EVO 4G was the first (check out the full review).

Inside, the Sprint Epic 4G will have Android 2.1 but an upgrade to Android 2.2 should hit by the end of the year. It will come with Samsung’s TouchWiz user interface, which I found to be pretty visually-pleasing if a bit too much like the Apple iPhone. A lot of people like the way the iPhone’s UI looks though.

We’ve also heard that the carrier will be hiring up to 100 more employees at its call center to handle the interest. Of course, if you don’t want to wait in line and want to save a few bucks at the same time, you can also buy the Sprint Epic 4G from Amazon, although I don’t know how much inventory it will have.

Are you excited about the Epic 4G or is the market just too crowded with high-end smartphones? Who’s planning to get one out there?
