Angry Birds upset with Microsoft over Windows Phone 7 promotions

The folks at Rovio may want to load some of those big, fat red birds in a slingshot and aim it at Microsoft because the Angry Birds creator is angry that the software giant is using its game to promote the upcoming Windows Phone 7 platform.

Microsoft used the game’s logo on one of its promotional pages for apps that will come to Windows Phone 7. This infuriated Rovio, which tweeted that “We have NOT committed to doing a Windows Phone 7 version,” and “Microsoft put the Angry Birds icon on their site without our permission.”

The Angry Birds team has not dismissed the notion of bringing the popular game to Windows Phone 7 but it was understandably upset that Microsoft used it to promote its new smartphone operating system.

Microsoft confirmed that it used the icon in error and it has removed the Angry Birds icon from its website.

The move shows how big this game has become, as the addictive game is even getting mainstream attention. There’s talks that the franchise will soon be made into a series of cartoons, movies and I already want the line of plush dolls.

We know that Microsoft Windows Phone 7 will be a beast for mobile gaming but a platform does need the likes of Angry Birds to be fully accepted in the mainstream. At the very least, having this app will put the platform on par with the competition.

Even if Windows Phone 7 doesn’t get the popular aviary game, it will have plenty for mobile gamers. There will be strong Xbox Live integration, so you’ll soon be able to manage your avatar and find multiplayer matches from the palm of your hand.

We also know that Microsoft has opened a game studio for its mobile platform, so you’ll have plenty of options when it comes to mobile gaming on Windows Phone 7.
