In preparation for the upcoming myTouch 4G, it looks like T-Mobile will be launching a new tethering / mobile hotspot plan starting November 3. For $14.99 every month on top of any unlimited data plan of $29 or up, users will be able to use their handsets as a modem for a single device, or if it’s supported, a mobile Wi-Fi hotspot for multiple devices.
The myTouch 4G is T-Mobile’s second HSPA+ handset after the G2, and though I’m sure speedy when it comes to data and an appropriate spearhead for a new Wi-Fi sharing plan, is really pushing the limit of the term “4G”. As far as specs go, it has a 1 GHz processor, runs Android 2.2, has a 5 megapixel camera (plus secondary video conferencing camera), 3.8″ display, and Wi-Fi calling capability.
As far as I’m concerned, plans like this feel like a rampant money-grab to charge people to use the data they already pay for on a device that already supports it. Sure, carriers don’t want their network overloaded, but that’s why soft caps are in place, right? At least T-Mobile’s offer is cheaper than Verizon’s $20 monthly fee. There are workarounds available if you’re willing to root, but that may get you in hot water with your service provider.
