If you’re holding off on the Galaxy Tab because the screen just isn’t large enough for you, then you’ll be happy to know that Samsung is showing off a Tab-like device that sports a 10-inch screen.
At the trade show in China, Samsung showed off an “e-reader” with a 10-inch screen that looks exactly like a Galaxy Tab but with a larger LCD display. It was also shown off making a video call, which further indicates that it’s a successor to the tablet rather than just a way to read e-books.
The 10-inch screen on the next-generation Galaxy Tab has a 1024 x 600 resolution and a 1000:1 aspectcontrast ratio (thanks commenters). That’s a pretty nice display and it’s also supposed to be a bit thinner and lighter than previous models.
We already know that Samsung is preparing 7-inch Super AMOLED screens for the next generation of Galaxy Tab units but it looks like it will be expanding those screen sizes in order to better compete against the Apple iPad. The iPad, with a 9.7-inch screen, can strike your average consumer as a better deal due to the real estate difference.
I’m a bit torn on this one, as I do like the 7-inch screen for tablets because it leads to a more portable device that’s more comfortable to hold. I don’t agree with Apple CEO Jobs’ assessment that 7-inch screens are tweeners.
With that said, the extra real estate can be quite comforting when you’re trying to watch something like Netflix on your couch. I suppose there’s nothing wrong with a Samsung Galaxy Tab being offered in multiple variants to appeal to as many customers as possible.
This is just Samsung taking the shotgun approach again, as the Galaxy S smartphone can be found on six major U.S. carriers and the Tab will be coming to four major carriers.
