Video: Nokia N8 survives a merry go round of pain [Never do this to your phone. Ever.]

Nokia, along with just about every other phone manufacturer on the planet, put their devices through a series of tests to see how well they’ll stand up to every day wear and tear. Most people don’t know that, so when they see a video like the one below they walk away impressed and full of amazement. Apple did something similar when they held a press conference to discuss the antenna on the iPhone 4 and showed people images of an anechoic chamber, which again, are something that everyone who builds a mobile phone has because they’re required to do testing and get proper certification for their hardware.

If you’ve ever watched Mad Men, a show that throws you back to the 1950s and centers around how advertising was all new and interesting, one of the very first episodes was a cigarette company trying to figure out how to differentiate themselves from everyone else. When Don Draper, the main character and creative genius of the series, asks how cigarettes are made, as soon as he heard the phrase “the tobacco is toasted” come out of his client’s mouth he insisted that “toasted” be used in all of their future advertising campaigns. The people from the cigarette company looked confused since everyone who makes smokes has to toast their tobacco, but what Don Draper, and what I’m trying to get to, is that not everyone knows that, so when they find out they’re stunned.

Back to the Nokia N8, it’s an excellent device, and Nokia knows how to build awesome hardware, it’s just when you turn it on and start fiddling with the software that you get chest pains and a headache because nothing makes sense. That will all change now that Nokia is promising more frequent software updates, and let’s not forget about MeeGo, but for now … at least you know if you drop your Nokia chances are it will survive.
