There has been a rumor going around saying that Sony Ericsson is getting ready to build Windows Phone 7 handsets, but the company was quick to put out that flame today. While we’d love to see some Xperia style devices packing the latest operating system from Microsoft, it just doesn’t look like it will happen any time soon.
Sony Ericsson France CEO Pierre Perron says that the company is in talks with Microsoft about licensing the operating system, but for now there aren’t any serious plans to put out a WP7 device.
“With Windows 7 we run the risk of standardising our smartphones. We would be obliged to compete only on design on price, which we want to avoid”, he told Les Echos.
It’s sad, I know, and personally I’d much rather have a Windows Phone 7 device from Sony Ericsson than an Android one as I’m not the biggest fan of UX. The hope here is that Sony Ericsson does get on the WP7 bandwagon quickly before it loses too much ground from its competition as Dell, HTC and Samsung are putting out some pretty compelling handsets.
