Sure we knew this is coming. Even if AT&T didn’t want to launch this feature before, now when they’re competing with Verizon they gotta make it clear – GSM version of the iPhone is better as it can handle voice and data simultaneously.
But I digress – the carrier’s spokesperson Seth Bloom confirmed they’ll support the mobile hotspot feature in iOS 4.3 once it becomes available on March 11th. He said: “To utilize this feature, customers will need to subscribe to the DataPro 4GB/$45 tethering data plan.” Nothing new here considering the same plan was required even if you wanted to tether the iPhone to a single laptop.
The mobile hotspot feature will turn the iPhone into a portable hotspot a la MiFi, creating WiFi Internet connection for multiple devices that lack 3G connectivity.
Finally, if patience is not your virtue, you can already make a hotspot with your iPhone by jailbreaking it and installing an app called MyWi. I’ve seen it in action and it rocks. 😉
