Delta Air Lines rolls out cellphone boarding pass at LaGuardia

As the mobile space continues to pervade every aspect of our lives, we’re going to inevitably see more integration of mobile phones with everyday services. The latest such Cellphone boarding passmobile-integration comes from Delta Air Lines.

Delta has announced that domestic air-travelers flying departing from New York’s LaGuardia airport may choose to use their cellphones in place of traditional paper boarding-passes. Passengers can download the digital boarding-pass to their mobile phone directly from Delta’s website. These cellphone boarding passes allow travelers to by-pass the ticket counter and proceed directly to the gate, where Delta employees can scan the cellphone-turned-boarding-pass and check passenger identification.

“Passengers can now quickly check in for their flight while en route to the airport or in a taxi or walking from the parking lot to the terminal,” said Steve Gorman, Delta’s EVP of operations. “The check-in process now can take place from anywhere, any time within 24 hours of departure.”

Continental Airlines launched their own digital boarding-pass program at four US airports earlier this year, as did Northwest, and with Delta on board to allow passengers to use their cellphones as boarding-passes it’s clear that the mobile revolution is gaining steam with the airline industry. And, we’re sure cash-strapped airlines are happy to cut costs by reducing their paper usage.
