iOS 4.3.1 gets untethered jailbreak via PwnageTool 4.3, redsn0w 0.9.6rc9

With a working jailbreak exploit for iOS 4.3.1 delivered to the hackers on the iPhone Dev Team last week, it really was only a matter of time before the latest version of iOS got an official jailbreak via PwnageTool and redsn0w. Today, the Dev Team released the new PwnageTool 4.3 and redsn0w 0.9.6rc9 to help Windows and Mac users liberate their iPhone, iPod Touch, or iPad from the clutches of a locked down version of iOS 4.3.1. The new jailbreak methods are as simple as connecting your iPhone to your computer, downloading some software, and clicking a couple buttons.

There’s a catch, though, with this latest jailbreak (there always is). While most of you out there will have no problems freeing your iPhone (or iPod Touch, or iPad) in order to download custom software and themes from the Cydia jailbreak app store, anyone with an iPad 2 will be left out in the cold. At least for now – the iPad 2 “requires a bootrom or iBoot-level exploit to install, and the iPad2 is not susceptible to either the limera1n or SHAtter bootrom exploits.”. The Verizon iPhone 4 (CDMA version) crowd will also have to wait, as the PwnageTool 4.3 and redsn0w 0.9.6rc9 software is not compatible with the iOS 4.2.6 version that the Verizon iPhone uses.

Finally, if you rely on the ultrasn0w unlock utility on your iPhone – which allows you to use your iPhone on any GSM carrier in the world (microSIM notwithstanding) – you should probably wait it out a bit longer. The ultrasn0w utility still needs to be updated to work with iOS 4.3.1, and should be out shortly. Keep in mind, if you update your iPhone to a stock IPSW firmware file, you will update your baseband firmware (modem firmware – the code that controls how your iPhone connects to wireless networks like AT&T and T-Mobile) and lose your baseband unlock forever.

The rest of you can simply download PwnageTool 4.3 or redsn0w 0.9.6rc9 to your computer and follow the simple, on-screen instructions to jailbreak your iOS device. PwnageTool 4.3 is more involved, and walks you through a point-and-click process to create a custom jailbroken IPSW firmware, which you use to restore your iPhone 4, iPod Touch or iPad 1. The process is not complicated, but it does take longer than redsn0w – oh, and it’s Mac-only. The redsn0w software is much simpler to use, and requires only that you connect your device to your computer and click a couple buttons – this tool is Mac and Windows compatible.

Download redsnow here (for Windows) and here (for Mac).
Download PwnageTool 4.3 (Mac only) here, here, or here (torrent).
