
Sprint said it will discontinue its Common Cents Mobile prepaid brand and offer existing customers Virgin Mobile’s payLo service, which is also targeted at the same “basic talker.” The move comes a year after the operator launched the low-cost prepaid service that was limited to Wal-Mart and was never rolled out nationally.
Existing customers have no reason to worry about it – they’ll still get 7-cent-per-minute calling, and can purchase Virgin Mobile top-up cards to replenish their minutes. Additional information about the transition will be released “in a few weeks.” Sprint did, however, said there will be no job cuts as a result of the change.
Aside from Common Cents, Sprint operates three other prepaid brands – Boost Mobile, Virgin Mobile and Assurance Wireless: Boost serves customers who are voice and text messaging-centric, Virgin Mobile is tailored towards users who are device and data-oriented, while Assurance Wireless provides eligible customers with a free wireless phone and 250 free minutes of national local and long-distance monthly service…
