Kill your cellphone signal buzz

There are only a few times when killing your buzz is considered a good thing. In this case, we’re going to be talking about killing that incessant RF interference-buzz associated with cellphone signals. Speakers that aren’t specifically shielded against electromagnetic interference will pick up on the radio frequencies of any cellphone signals nearby, resulting in that annoying “buzz” whenever you bring your handset in close proximity to an active speaker.

This is one of the few kinds of “buzz” that’s unacceptable to us, and MacLife has found a way to quiet down those speakers. The solution is as simple as plucking the ferrite beads off the end of some USB cables and fitting them around your speaker’s speaker wire. You can also tape then along the axis of the speaker wire to prevent some (if not all) of that RF interference.

Notice the plastic bulge at the end of the USB cable below, inside is the ferrite bead that you’ll want to get at.

Fit them around, or in-line, with your speaker wire.

Enjoy some buzz-free music.

All our speakers are magnetically shielded, so we’re not going to sacrifice any USB cables for this “hack.” But, if you find yourself needing to escape that annoying speaker buzz, give this solution a go. And, let us know how it works, ‘kay?
