Rovio, the company behind the Angry Birds franchise, acquired the leading Finnish animation studio Kombo, for an undisclosed sum of cash and stock. Following the acquisition, Kombo will focus their production efforts entirely on Rovio properties.
It is said that the acquisition of the Helsinki-based studio will strengthen Rovio’s animation production capabilities, with the long-term goal of creating a “world class powerhouse in animated entertainment.” The two companies have had a “long and fruitful relationship” in the past and the idea is to take that relationship to the next level. On that note, Rovio says the deal combines one of the most talented animation studios in the region with the fastest growing entertainment property in the world.
Angry Birds has already surpasses 200 million downloads and now the company is looking forward to bring the franchise to China.
