Typing and using your hands to do things these days is becoming overrated, and it seems Nuance is making sure we have more than one way to do fingerless input. Just today the company announced a new service for the PC and iPhone that enables a new kind of voice-based text input.
For the PC, they updated their Dragon Naturally Speaking application to version 11.5, which allows you to speak out loud into your iPhone, iPad, iPod touch, or PC mic and have it translated into text. You can even update your social medium of choice thanks to the voice recognition software. This feature works by simple saying “post to” and your computer is set to pick that up and then you follow by saying “Twitter” or “Facebook”. When the computer prompts, you say the message you’re intending to spread to the world. This new app could be very useful for people like us that are always writing an article but want to keep our friends up-to-date.
The Dragon Remote Microphone app is what they are calling their new voice input system for iOS. It allows you to turn your iPhone or iPad into a virtual microphone. This microphone allows you to connect to your computer over the local Wi-Fi network and then allow you to use the device’s mic to share your latest updates via their Dragon Naturally Speaking application.
Nuance has been around since 1997, and worked on creating new voice features to go in our cars, computers, wireless devices, and even phones. Their latest mobile product is a custom Android keyboard called FlexT9 that includes Swype-style gestures, as well as built-in voice recognition.
Both of these applications seem very useful. They are bringing forth a new way to do text input, and with all the technology we have today, small innovations like this will likely lead to something much bigger.
