Modern interactive fiction writer Andrew Plotkin is going for the growing army of iPad users. His first title, called My Secret Hideout, is described as an “an interactive toy… or rather poem… or artwork…” rather than a game.
Whatever the official description is, this application definitely won’t increase your productivity. Your “goal” is to drag leaves onto the branches of a tree to increase the size of a treehouse and alter its description.
Then once you’re done with the treehouse — and you like what you see — you can save it and/or share it with friends. There is “no goal, no score, [and] no trophies.” I guess the idea is just to make something beautiful, though I’m not sure I find it that entertaining. I’m writing about My Secret Hideout to show the diversity of the iPad’s app eco-system, with even fiction writers jumping on board. Obviously, Android has a lot of catching up to do…
