Similar to the problems that some iPhone owners started experiencing after upgrading to iOS 5, users of Nokia’s first Windows Phone, the Lumia 800, are having trouble getting their smartphone to last for more than a few hours. And again, similar to how Apple released iOS 5.0.1 and then admitted that they’ll need to release iOS 5.0.2 as well to fix any lingering bugs, Nokia has announced that they’ll issues a pair of software updates to help customers having battery life issues. The official statement, as given on their official support forum, goes something like:
“We understand that some people have expressed concerns about battery life on the Nokia Lumia 800. Early investigations show that the majority of people are enjoying the full Nokia Lumia experience without any problems. A software update in early December will include improvements to power efficiency, while a second update in early January introduces further enhancements to battery life and battery charging. Both are planned updates and will be made available via Zune. We recommend that anyone who still has concerns contact local Nokia care representatives at their earliest convenience.”
When we reviewed the Lumia 800 we didn’t have any battery life issues, nor do we have any issues with iOS 5 on either the iPhone 4 or the new 4S. We’re the lucky ones apparently, but we feel for those of your who can’t get your work done because your device is constantly beeping at you, asking to be plugged in for charging. That being said, there’s a clear trend that with every new generation of smartphones battery life is getting worse. Partly because screens are getting bigger, partly because processors are being clocked faster, and most definitely because we do more with our phones today than we did even just 5 years ago.
Who is going to stop, fine tune, and deliver something that’s actually usable for several days? Remember feature phones that could go for more than a week? That’s asking for a bit too much, but a solid 2 days of heavy use would be swell.
