Yandex, which is the leading internet company in Russia and which search engine is now default on Windows Phone devices sold in the country, acquired SPB Software, the company that we best known for their UI software SPB Shell 3D as well as some other apps like SPB Brain Evolution, SPB TV and SPB Time.

Yandex wants a piece of the mobile phone’s homescreen market to push its cloud services to the end users. Hence it will use the knowledge and expertise of SPB Software to partner with the players in the mobile ecosystem. In addition, Yandex will emerge as a default option for search on phones that ship with SPB Shell 3D like Huawei Honor.

Commenting on the news, Yandex’s CEO Arkady Volozh said: “Mobile is a vital part of our growth strategy. The acquisition of SPB Software creates new market potential for us and a plethora of possibilities for innovative solutions for our partners. SPB Shell 3D is an ideal foundation on which to build up our mobile opportunity.”
