AT&T announced Sony Ericsson Xperia ion, the handset maker’s first device with a dual-core processor and 720p screen. This superphone doesn’t wear Ericsson badge and will be released as the first Sony Android smartphone in the second quarter of this year. Unfortunately, we don’t know the exact date, but you’ll be the first to know the second we get that information.

Specs wise, the Xperia ion is one of those beast phones, sporting the mentioned dual-core CPU that clocks at 1.5GHz, 1280×720 HD Reality display, LTE connectivity, 12-megapixel Exmor-R rear camera with full HD video recording support, 1.3-megapixel front-facing camera with 720p video recording and 16GB of built-in storage. It’s also a PlayStation certified device, meaning those of you who pull the plug on this one will be able to grab some cool games before the rest of the Android community.

On the downside though, the new Sony phone will ship with Android Gingerbread on board, though an Ice Cream Sandwich update will be released shortly afterwards. Guess we have AT&T, rather than Sony, to blame for this — additional carrier testing or something.

Price was not announced, but as we know from many previous devices – AT&T will most likely offer the new Xperia phone for about $250 on a two-year contract that definitely includes a mandatory data add-on…
